Failed Back Surgery Syndrome or simply Failed Back Syndrome is not a disease, it is a condition when expectation of either patient or surgeon is not fulfilled. The term is mostly restricted to painful miserable condition of patient and it is progressive in most situation.
This condition may appear even after apparently successful surgery.
What are the reasons of Failed Back Surgery Syndrome?

Patient selection is very important before surgery. In spinal pain like back pain diagnosis is not always easy. So even if surgery was done perfectly source of pain was something else which remain like before and patient continues to suffer. The common mistake is done by doing surgery only based on MRI findings.
These are due to improperly done surgeries like injury and damage to the nerve root or other important structures, infections etc.
At times right surgery has been done rightly in proper patients but still some complications may appear where nothing can done. Like fibrosis following surgery, instability following surgery etc.
